What you need for artificial planting
Three things turn this planter into a finished arrangement. They are sold separately, and all of them are listed under Pair it with below.
- The steel top — Newport Planter Medium 36x35 Chalk Beige - Steel Top Insert. A powder-coated ring cut to sit inside this planter, with a central opening that takes the Fomosa pot.
- The inner pot — Plastic Black Fomosa Pot, 23 × 24cm. This is what holds the plant, and it drops straight into the opening in the steel top.
- A topping — bark chip or moss, whichever finish you want. It fills around the Fomosa pot and covers the steel top, so the planter reads as one piece. Bark chip is bought per planter — one 1kg bag for this size. Moss goes further: one 500g pack covers several planters, so you won't need one per pot.
The steel top is what makes this work. You don't pack the base with polystyrene, rubble or offcuts to lift the plant to the right height, and the plant can be changed later without digging any of it out.
Planting live in this planter
You need none of the parts above. This planter can be planted directly — there are markings underneath showing where to drill drainage holes, which is how we'd finish it for outdoors. Indoors we suggest a complete liner instead: this size takes the 25cm Complete Liner, which carries the soil on a deck above a water reservoir, so the plant draws water up as it would in the ground rather than being watered from the top. Worth knowing that the liner doesn't sit high enough on its own — you lift it on something and pack around it to hold it steady.
