A good artificial plant is not simply one that looks convincing in a photograph. The real test is what happens when you look closer: at the material, colour, leaf construction, stems, proportions and the way the plant can be shaped in a space.
Artificial plants are manufactured by many different factories, using different materials, moulds, printing methods and construction techniques. Two plants that appear similar online can therefore be very different products when you see them in person.
At Francisco Plant Couture, our starting point is always the plant itself. We understand how living plants grow, how their foliage sits and how they occupy a space. That is the benchmark we use when assessing an artificial version.

1. Start with the material
The material affects far more than how a plant feels. It influences the finish, colour, flexibility, durability and the level of botanical detail a manufacturer can reproduce.
We generally favour good-quality virgin plastics where appropriate. They can produce clean moulding, strong leaf structure and detailed surfaces. Fabric foliage can also work very well for particular species and applications, but the important point is that material alone is not a guarantee of quality. It needs to suit the plant being reproduced.

2. Look at the colour before you look at the label
One of the quickest ways an artificial plant gives itself away is colour. Living foliage is rarely one flat shade of green. Depending on the species, you may see variation between mature and new leaves, subtle tonal shifts, veins, markings and different finishes across the leaf surface.
Good artificial foliage uses printing, pigment and moulding to reproduce this variation with restraint. Poorer-quality products can be too bright, too uniform, or use colour that simply does not feel botanical.

Do not ask only, “Does it look real?” Ask what makes it look convincing: colour variation, veins, surface finish, leaf shape, attachment points and the structure of the plant as a whole.

3. Leaf construction matters
Construction is one of the details customers often cannot see in a standard ecommerce photograph, yet it can make a significant difference to both appearance and longevity.
Take an Areca palm as an example. We prefer a construction where the palm leaf is formed as a complete piece along the rib. This helps the frond hold its natural shape and gives it greater structural strength. On some lower-quality palms, the individual leaflets are attached separately; these can be more vulnerable to breaking or coming loose over time.
The same principle applies across other plant types: look at how leaves connect to stems, how branches are supported, whether joins are conspicuous and whether the construction allows the plant to behave visually like the living species it represents.

4. A plant needs structure, not just leaves
Leaf count is useful, but more leaves do not automatically make a better plant. What matters is how the foliage is distributed and whether the underlying stem and branch structure creates a believable silhouette.
Some artificial plants have wired stems that can be opened, bent and shaped considerably. Others use more rigid stems and rely mainly on leaf adjustment. Neither construction is automatically right or wrong. They create different results and require different amounts of setup.
This is one reason comparing two plants from photographs alone can be misleading. Similar height and species descriptions do not mean the products will have the same fullness, flexibility or finished footprint.

5. Size is more than the number in the product title
A common mistake is to focus on height without considering width and overall proportion. A 40 cm plant, for example, is genuinely small. Likewise, a tall plant can still feel undersized if it is too narrow for the planter or the surrounding architecture.
Our listed plant height is measured from the bottom of the weighted black nursery pot to the tallest foliage point while the plant is in its packaged form. Width is measured after the foliage and branches have been opened and shaped. Those two measurements therefore describe different states of the plant — intentionally — because they answer two different practical questions.
When selecting a plant, consider the planter opening, planter height, viewing distance, ceiling height, surrounding furniture and how much visual volume the finished planting needs.
6. Shaping is part of the finished product
Many artificial plants arrive compacted for transport. They are not meant to remain in that shape.
Opening branches, bending wired stems, turning leaves and creating irregularity changes the plant dramatically. The aim is not perfect symmetry. Living plants respond to light, space and growth; their leaves do not all sit at identical angles. A well-shaped artificial plant should have the same sense of natural variation.
This is also why the same artificial plant can look ordinary in one installation and excellent in another. Product quality matters, but so do setup, planter choice, proportion and placement.
7. Think about where the plant will be used
There is no single artificial plant that is “best” for every application. A plant viewed closely on a residential console has different demands from a large planting installation behind a reception desk or across a commercial interior.
For commercial plantscaping, we consider viewing distance, scale, circulation, access for cleaning, the architecture of the space and the composition as a whole. A successful installation may combine broad foliage, palms, finer textures and lower planting so the greenery reads naturally at the scale of the interior.

Artificial planting is particularly useful where growing conditions are unsuitable, access is difficult or ongoing horticultural maintenance is impractical. It provides a consistent greenery solution without pretending to be something it is not.

A well-made artificial plant can come remarkably close to the botanical character of the original, but it will never become a living plant. We think that distinction should be embraced rather than disguised.
A quick artificial plant quality checklist
- Colour: Does the foliage have believable tonal variation rather than one flat green?
- Surface detail: Are veins, moulding and texture appropriate to the species?
- Construction: Are leaves and stems securely and convincingly assembled?
- Structure: Does the branch pattern create a natural silhouette?
- Flexibility: Can the plant be shaped appropriately for its intended use?
- Scale: Will its height, opened width and visual volume work with the planter and room?
- Application: Is this particular plant suited to where and how it will be viewed?
The final test
Quality is not a single specification. It is the cumulative effect of material, colour, construction, botanical accuracy, proportion and how the plant performs once it has been shaped and placed in a real interior.
